Psychology program

General Statement

general statement | requirements for the minor

The Psychology program
attempts to reflect the scientific rigor and the applicability potential of modern psychology. The study of behavior and mental processes are approached from the theoretical and practical perspectives with the understanding that the students at St. John Vianney will be able to
use psychological knowledge to better understand human nature.
The Psychology program in its theoretical and practical foundations is based on a solid Christian philosophical tradition and on the value of scientific psychological methodology. The respect for what we have inherited in the Teachings of the Church and the necessary adoption of a critical thinking process when analyzing scientific facts is an essential guideline for
this program. This rationale has inspired the following objectives:
  • To meet the needs of students who are interested in know-ing more about the psychological nature of human beings, and the way in which psychology as a science facilitates this knowledge.
  • To provide students with the necessary support from psychology in order to understand mental processes and behavior in a multi-cultural context.
  • To provide students with a traditional theoretical basis appropriate for those who will pursue studies in general human and/or pastoral services.
  • To help students to understand their own psychological makeup in order that, knowing themselves better, they may understand others as well.
  • To make students aware of the interplay between Theology, Philosophy, and Psychology, and to reflect on the Christian foundation of human existence.
