English as a second language

ESL 151 - BASIC ENGLISH I (s)
This is an elementary course for students of English as a Second Language. It includes the study of basic grammar and syntax, reading, conversation and composition.

ESL 152 - BASIC ENGLISH II (3)
This course is a continuation of ESL 151.
(Both taken together).

ESL 203 - ESL SPEECH AND PRONUNCIATION (s)
This is an intermediate level course that focuses on pronunciation and speaking where the student practices the vowels and consonants, memorizes texts and gives oral presentations in class.

ESL 251 - INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH I (3)
This is an intermediate course that includes the study of intermediate grammar, and writing short papers based on selected readings and lectures.

ESL 252 - INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH II (3) This is a continuation of ESL 251.

ESL 301 - ADVANCED WRITING l (3)
This is an advanced course for students of English as Second Language that includes advanced grammar, reading literary texts and learning how to write a long term paper.

ESL 305 - ADVANCED WRITING II (3)
This is a continuation of ESL 301 that focuses on the research paper.

ESL 306 - TOEFL PREPARATION (3)
This course is for those students who finish the advanced level and must prepare to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). It includes practice in the Computer Laboratory and the use of a TOEFL textbook.

ESL 353 - ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION (3)
This is an advanced level course that focuses on the clear pronunciation of Standard English. It is designed to help the student discriminate all English vowels and consonants both separately and within larger linguistic constructs.

ESL 354 - ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION (3)
This is a continuation of ESL 353 that focuses on public speaking and communications.

ESL 390 - INDEPENDENT STUDY (2-6)
The topic is selected to meet the individual academic needs of the student.

ENG 101 - READING AND COMPOSITION I (3)
A critical reading and discussion of essays, poetry, drama and short fiction. Emphasis is given to contrasts among basic forms and to the continuing development of expository prose skills.

ENG 102 - READING AND COMPOSITION II (3)
A continuation of ENG 101 with added emphasis given to the development of expository writing skills.

ENG 201 - HISTORY OF ENGLISH LITERATURE I (3) Reading and discussion of selected English works which illustrate the growth of English literature from its Anglo-Saxon roots up to the present.

ENG 202 - HISTORY OF ENGLISH LITERATURE II (s)
A continuation of readings and discussions of selected English writings begun in ENC 201.

ENG 301 - ADVANCE WRITING (3)
This is an advanced course includes advanced grammar, reading literary texts and learning how to write a long term paper.

ENG 305 - WRITING A TERM PAPER (3)
Writing research papers.

LIT 211 - INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE (3)
The study of literature and the practice of critical analysis. Students read works from various time periods and cultures and learn to distinguish between literary genres: fiction, poetry and drama.

LIT 212 - INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE: PART II (3)
A continuation of LIT-311, with special focus on authors writing after World War II, including Wiesel, Camus, Hemingway, Alan Paton, Graham Creene, Octavio Paz, and Alice walker. Note: LIT-3 r r is not a pre-reguisite for tbis course.

ENG 480 - SPECIAL TOPICS (var)
The topic is selected to meet the academic needs of the individual students.

ENG 490 - INDEPENDENT STUDY (var)
The topic is selected to meet the academic needs of the individual student.
